The Muncie Three Trails Music Series
CONCERTS DWNTWN!THE MUNCIE THREE TRAILS MUSIC SERIES
PRESS RELEASE APRIL 17, 2013
The Muncie Three Trails Music Series, a new annual event at Canan Commons in Downtown Muncie, will debut this summer with four FREE public concerts. All headlining artists are critically acclaimed national recording artists. The artists appearing in 2013 are: The Otis Taylor Band (Blues), Iris DeMent (Folk/Americana), Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper (Bluegrass) and the Rebirth Brass Band (New Orleans Jazz). The series begins in June and is produced by Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, Muncie Arts and Culture Council, and the City of Muncie. Comprehensive details for the Muncie Three Trails Music Series (including concert schedules, artist profiles and link, trail and city maps and information, and contact information) can be found on its website HERE.

Bluesman Otis Taylor (and Band), will kick off the series with a performance on Saturday, June 1, at 8 PM. Taylor is a nationally acclaimed artist and a 4-time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll for “Blues Album of the Year” (including in 2012 for Contraband). Living Blues Readers Poll awarded him “Best Blues Entertainer” and he has received numerous W.C. Handy nominations throughout the years (including winning for Best New Artist Debut in 2001).
Iris DeMent, a 2-time Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Folk Album, headlines the second concert of the series on Saturday, July 20, at 8 PM. Country legend Merle Haggard calls DeMent, “the best singer I’ve ever heard." She has performed and recorded with a veritable who’s-who of folk and country artists, including John Prine, Ralph Stanley, Steve Earle, and Emmylou Harris, and has been featured numerous times on NPR and on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion.
The third concert will feature virtuoso Bluegrass fiddler Michael Cleveland and his band, Flamekeeper. Cleveland is a 9-time winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) “Fiddle Player of the Year”, and, with his band Flamekeeper, has also picked up 4 IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year and 3 Instrumental Album of the Year awards. They will perform on Saturday, September 7, at 8 PM.
2012 Grammy Award winners, the Rebirth Brass Band, will close out the Muncie Three Trails Music Series with a show on Thursday, October 3, at 7:30 PM. They are a New Orleans institution and were featured in Treme Tour, the HBO series about New Orleans after Katrina. Rebirth won a Grammy for their 2011 release, "The Rebirth of New Orleans".
The Muncie Three Trails Music Series’ primary mission is to bring critically acclaimed, national recording artists to perform at Canan Commons, Downtown Muncie’s new outdoor performance venue. All concerts will be free to the public. Its second mission is to promote the many recreational, artistic, and cultural attractions located along, or in close proximity to Muncie’s popular “three trails” -- The White River Greenway, The Cardinal Greenway and the Muncie Arts & Culture Trail. The organizers hope the combination of outstanding concerts, scenic trails, and interesting destinations will encourage local citizens and visitors to “EXPLORE THE TRAILS, ENJOY THE MUSIC”.
Funding for the Muncie Three Trails Music Series is generously provided by: George & Frances Ball Foundation, Ball Brothers Foundation, Community Foundation of Muncie & Delaware County (from the Edmund F. & Virginia B. Ball Fund), Sherman & Marjorie Zeigler Foundation, Hamer D. & Phyllis C. Shafer Foundation, City of Muncie, and the Muncie Visitors Bureau. Big News For Downtown Muncie!
The Arc Development Group, LLC (ADG) was established in 2012 by The Arc of Indiana. The purpose of the LLC is to invest its time and resources in business ventures that provide employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ADG is currently exploring the feasibility of building a hotel in downtown Muncie in the vicinity of the Horizon Convention Center.
In addition, this venture would provide the first statewide hospitality training institute where individuals with disabilities would come for training in the hospitality industry. At the end of the program, they would receive a certificate that they can take back to their community to seek employment.
Indiana businesses would be invited and encouraged to visit the hotel to learn how to effectively utilize this untapped labor pool. Programs would be offered to human resource professionals on topics like the benefits of hiring individuals with disabilities and how to easily make accommodations for employees with disabilities.
To complement the hotel and promote independence, this project would also include the development of multiple entrepreneurial ventures within the hotel that are owned by people with disabilities. These could include a flower shop, news stand, shoe shine stand and other related ventures.
“The Arc is excited about the possibility of building a training hotel in downtown Muncie,” stated Kim Dodson, Executive Director of the ADG. “This will provide a unique opportunity unlike anything in the country.”
The ADG is working in partnership with the City of Muncie, Horizon Convention Center and Muncie Downtown Development Partnership. Community leaders have welcomed this potential opportunity and are committed to inclusion and a vision to make the city welcoming and accessible for everyone. Muncie also provides the opportunity for important partnerships for post-secondary training.
Mayor Dennis Tyler’s relationship with The Arc of Indiana developed during his tenure as a state representative. “I’m excited about this economic development opportunity. I look forward to continuing my work with The Arc at the local level and improving the quality of life for the residents of Muncie and the great state of Indiana, “ Mayor Tyler stated.
The “Teaching Hotel” concept would create a modern economic development project that demonstrates the strength of private and public investments. It would increase employment among a group of people with a current unemployment rate of 72%. Additionally, it would provide a positive economic impact for the City of Muncie through additional convention business for the Horizon Convention Center and property taxes to the city.
This unique vision for a training hotel would create local jobs, allow people with disabilities to gain employment experience and help students receive hands-on training, as well as bring nationwide attention to an endeavor unlike any in the country. There are no other hotels like this in the country and it would set the standard for any future teaching hotels.
The Arc of Indiana has a proven track record of taking risks and turning them into successful opportunities for people with disabilities. The Arc Master Trust celebrates its 25th anniversary this year as one of the largest special needs trust in the country with $45 million managed by The Arc of Indiana.
A decision on whether to move this project forward will be made after the feasibility study is completed in early spring.

Heorot In The News!InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report
The owner of a Muncie bar has helped create a new beer that is now being sold throughout the country. The Heorot’s Stan Stephens and brewing partner Bob Cox introduced Imperial Red Ale as part of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.‘s “Beer Camp.” Stephens says the national distribution is currently set for a limited time, but there is a possibility Sierra Nevada could pick it up permanently.
Stephens says Red Imperial Ale is the latest boost for Indiana’s beer industry, which he believes is gaining momentum. He says there has been a noticeable increase in craft and microbrew sales at his bar, and they are replacing imports.
He says the Imperial Ale is heavier than a normal pale ale, and has been well received at The Heorot.
He says the national exposure is another boost for Indiana’s growing beer industry.

Ring in the New Year Downtown
Muncie Downtown Development Partnership invites you to join us for the finale of “Light Up Downtown” sponsored by Indiana Michigan Power/AEP on December 31st from 11:00pm-12:30 at Canan Commons in the 400 Block of South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie.
We will conclude our month long holiday celebration with the traditional New Year’s Eve Ball Drop hosted by the Muncie PxyXTGear Robotics Team. The evening will include live footage of the New York City Ball Drop on the big screen, fire pits for marshmallow roasting, hot chocolate and good cheer for all.
After the ball drop at midnight, a short fireworks display will usher in the first ever “Downtown Wish Lantern Release”. If you have never experienced the simple, peaceful beauty of a wish lantern release, or if you like a warm moment now, check it out!
Amazing, right! Each lantern released can be sent with a positive thought or a wish for the New Year.
Our goal is to release 500 lanterns to ring in 2013. In order to pull off this spectacle, we need your help!
We would like to enlist the assistance of at least 50 group leaders who would be responsible for assisting up to 10 pairs of lantern lighter for the release. As a group leader/educator you would be responsible for:
• Attending (1) half an hour training session prior to the event so that you will be comfortable with the process. We will have several dates to choose from.
• Recruitment of up to 20 team members
• Pick up lanterns for your group and distribute them the night of the event. Group leaders will need to be at Canan Commons by 11pm
• Ensure that all team members bring a lighter
• Assist with the communication and lighting of your groups lanterns
If this sound like something you would like to be a part of, please email cheryl@gmail.com
We are very excited to hear from you, let’s “Light Up Downtown” together!

Tell Us What You Think!Your feedback is important in prioritizing Downtown projects.
Muncie Downtown Development Partnership held a public meeting on June 11, 2012 to present new project solutions for our Downtown. During the meeting, a survey was distributed to assist with prioritization of the proposed projects. Projects are being reviewed largely to satisfy ADA Compliance in Downtown.
We want everyone to have a voice in how our Downtown area develops, so we’re offering an online version of the same survey. If you’d like to participate, click here.
The survey will take approximately five minutes to complete, and will help us determine how our Downtown grows. Thank you for participating!

Time's Up2 hour parking limit to be enforced
For the last 10 years, all Downtown public parking lots have had a 2 hour parking limit policy. However, for those who watched, waited, and took their chances on a ticket, it became apparent that the southern half of the parking lot at the corner of Jackson and High Street was exempt from time limits and ticketing. This is about to change. Ownership questions and prior parking space commitments of the southern half of the lot had prompted Code Enforcement to cease ticketing. Through an inter local agreement, the City will once again begin enforcing 2 hour parking time limits. This agreement was prompted by complaints from business owners that students and Downtown employees were occupying parking that was intended for customers, creating short term parking issues.
