ArtsWalk Returns to DWNTWN October 1 with New AR Features and DWNTWN IDOL Finale
On Thursday, October 1, downtown Muncie will turn its sidewalks over to the artists, makers, and performers who shape its creative identity. ArtsWalk is a special edition of First Thursday that will run from 5–8 p.m. and give the community a chance to meet the people behind the work. Attendees can browse handmade goods, watch live performances, and explore augmented reality glimpses of the buildings that once stood along the same streets.
This year's ArtsWalk features an expanded Echoes of Muncie augmented reality experience, created by Ball State University's IDIA Lab students and faculty. Using their phones, guests can step back in time and see former downtown buildings in their original glory. New this year, the Rivoli Theatre and Ball Stores buildings join the Wysor Building, Wysor Grand Opera House, and Delaware County Courthouse in the immersive experience, made possible with support from the Ball Brothers Foundation.
Art lovers won’t want to miss YART at Canan Commons, a “yard sale for art” featuring one-of-a-kind, handmade finds from local makers and artisans, all priced under $40. Local and visiting artisans will also showcase their work in various media at Cornerstone, Gordy, and other galleries throughout downtown.
The evening builds to the DWNTWN IDOL Finale at 6 p.m. on the Canan Commons stage, where 20 finalists from two rounds of competition will sing for the crown, a $500 cash prize, and more. The crowd gets a say too — attendees can cast a live People's Choice vote for their favorite performer while a judging panel determines the overall winner. The finale is sponsored by the City of Muncie, with support for the stage provided by Ball State University.
Fan-favorite Soup Crawl returns as well, organized by PrimeTrust FCU and benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank. Guests can purchase a ticket to sample a variety of incredible soups from local restaurants as they make their way through downtown. Food trucks will round out the food and drink offerings alongside downtown's local eateries. Because ArtsWalk takes place within the Downtown Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), guests can enjoy their favorite beverages from participating restaurants and vendors as they explore the event.
"ArtsWalk is one of our favorite nights of the year because it puts the creativity of this community on full display," said Amanda Holmquist, Executive Director of Muncie Downtown Development Partnership. “This event gives people a reason to come check out how much talent is here in Muncie. You don't have to leave town to find good art and fun experiences.”
