Catching Up with 2025 DWNTWN IDOL Winner India Potter
Last year, India Potter stepped onto the DWNTWN IDOL stage not expecting much beyond the chance to perform. By the end of the night, she walked away as Muncie's newest singing champion, trophy in hand.
Now, one year later, she's returning to DWNTWN IDOL in a brand-new role: judge.
As contestants prepare to take the stage during this year's Fire Up DWNTWN celebration on Saturday, August 1, we caught up with India to reflect on her experience, what winning meant to her, and the advice she has for this year's performers.
Finding a home in Muncie
India's connection to Muncie began more than a decade ago.
"I came to Ball State around 2013 and I've been here ever since," she said. "Muncie has really become home for me."
Over the years, she's become increasingly involved in the local music scene, performing at open mic nights and continuing to share her love of music with the community.
Taking a chance on DWNTWN IDOL
When India decided to audition for DWNTWN IDOL, she wasn't necessarily expecting to win.
"There weren't a ton of people auditioning at the time," she said. "I think I may have stood out because of my song choice. I performed 'Creep,' which isn't always what people expect."
"This was my first time participating and it was such a fun opportunity to perform," she said.”
The moment she realized she had won
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night came when India's name was announced as the winner.
"I honestly didn't think I'd win at all," she said. "I was completely shocked and really happy."
Winning came with more than just bragging rights. India received the coveted DWNTWN IDOL trophy, a $500 cash prize, and an overnight stay at the Courtyard by Marriott.
"I proudly showed off the trophy that night while celebrating downtown," she laughed. "The prize money actually helped me pay for a new car, and I recently used the hotel stay as part of my bachelorette celebration because I just got married."
More importantly, India says winning gave her additional confidence as a performer.
"I think it gave me some credibility," she said. "Since then, I've done more open mic nights and continued performing."
Advice for this year's contestants
This year, India will experience DWNTWN IDOL from the judges' table, and she hopes contestants embrace the opportunity.
"My biggest advice is just to be brave," she said. "Have fun and entertain the crowd."
She also encourages contestants to think carefully about their song selection.
"Pick a song that gets people excited and engaged," she said. "And remember, they use KaraFun, so if you need to change the key of your song to fit your voice better, you absolutely can."
Above all, she wants contestants to enjoy the experience.
"You never know what can happen," she said.
